Assessment Progress Page – Star Help

How do I get to this page?

Log in to Renaissance.
On the Home page, select Star Custom.

Who can do this with default user permissions?

District Level Administrators/District Staff: any class or school in the district
School Level Administrators/School Staff: any class in their school
Teachers: any of their own classes
District Dashboard Owners: will be able to select Star Custom and view existing plans

The Assessment Progress page is the "hub" of Star Custom, where you can view assessment progress, drill down further into the data, and launch into planning.

Use the drop-down lists in the navigation sentence to choose which students and time period you want to view assessment information for.

For time period, you can choose a custom date range, the entire school year, the last 30 days, the (current) marking period (only those with the type "Marking Period" selected, not semesters or quarters), the last 7 days, or today.

Choosing a custom date range

Select the current date range, and then select Custom Dates from the drop-down list.
In the pop-up window, type the start and end dates you want for the range. You can also select the calendar icons at the right end of the date fields and choose the dates from the calendars that open. The dates can be up to 3 weeks apart.
When you are done choosing your custom dates, select Continue (or select Cancel to close the pop-up without saving a custom date range).

The table shows all of the plans for the selected students during the time period chosen. Each row shows the status of all the assessments in one plan. Select one of the column headers to sort the data in the table based on that column (either alphabetically or numerically).

Assessment Plan: The name of the plan
Start Date: The date students could begin working on assessments in the plan
Assigned To: The class or group the assessments have been assigned to (including cross-class groups)
Upcoming: Assessments that have been scheduled, but the scheduled start date has not arrived yet (assessments do not appear in a student's Assignment List until the day it is scheduled)
Ready: Assessments that have been scheduled and the scheduled start date has arrived
Started: Assessments that students have started but have not completed yet
Needs Scoring: Assessments that students have finished and have one or more items that require hand scoring
Scored: Assessments that are finished and that have been scored (these assessments are considered completed)

There are a number of views and tasks that you can get to from the Assessment Progress page. Expand a question or statement below to find the information you are looking for.

Assessments and Plans

Which assessments are part of a plan?

Select the name of a plan to see all the assessments that are in that plan .

When you schedule assessments, you choose one or more assessments to be taken within a certain time frame. All of those assessments combined make up a plan.
Select Assessment Plans to return to the prior view.

I want to view an assessment that I created myself.

Refer to the help for the Assessments Page.

Show me the scores for all of the completed assessments in a plan.

In the row for the plan, select the number in the Scored column . Then, in the pop-up window, select Results .
On the Review Results Dashboard, select the name of the lesson plan .
In the row for an assessment, the figure in the Score column shows the average score for all students who have completed the assessment. Select the arrow next to the name of an assessment (it will change to a down arrow ) to see the scores for each student that has completed the assessment.
At the end of the row for an assessment, select View in the Actions column to open a pop-up menu where you can access the Performance Across Skills, Performance Across Item Types, and Mastery data for that assessment.
Select Back to Previous App at the top of the page to return to the prior view.

Show me a specific student's scores for all of the completed assessments in a plan.

Select the arrow next to the name of a plan. (It will change to a down arrow ). Then, select the student's name .

This takes you to the results page for that student. All of the student's scores for completed assessments in the plan are listed in the Score column .
Select Back to return to the prior view.

If a student was assigned an assessment but did not take it when it was available, you will see a "Needs Approval" message in the Status column. Select Needs Approval and then Make Available in the pop-up window to let the student take the assessment even though the dates it was originally available for have passed.

Hand-Scoring and Editing Scores

Have any students completed a Star Custom assessment that requires hand-scoring?

A number in the Needs Scoring column for a plan represents the number of students who have finished an assessment in that plan that requires one or more items to be hand-scored.

I'm ready to start hand-scoring assessment items in completed assessments.

Select the arrow next to the name of a plan that has a number in the Needs Scoring column. (It will change to a down arrow ).
In the list of students, any students who have finished an assessment and need to have one or more questions hand-scored will have a number in the Needs Scoring column . Select the name of one of these students .
On the page showing assessment results for the student, select Submitted in the Status column .
In the pop-up window, select Score Activity .

This will take you to the page where you can hand-score assessment items that require it.

I need to edit a student's test score.

Select the arrow next to the name of a plan that has a number in the Scored column. (It will change to a down arrow ).
In the list of students, any students who have finished the assessment and have had that assessment scored will have a number in the Scored column . Select the name of one of these students .
On the page showing assessment results for the student, select Complete in the Status column .
In the pop-up window, select Review/Rescore .

This will take you to the page where you can edit the student's score for the assessment.

Scores and Skills

I want to see students' scores in relation to the skills covered by an assessment.

Select the name of a plan to see all the assessments that are in that plan .
Assessments that have at least one student's work scored will show a number in the Scored column . Select that number, and then select Performance Across Skills in the pop-up window .

This will show you the skills which were covered by the chosen assessment, and the average of the students' scores on questions that focused on each skill .
Select Back to return to the prior view.

I want to see a specific student's scores in relation to the skills covered by an assessment.

Select the name of a plan to see all the assessments that are in that plan .
Assessments that have at least one student's work scored will show a number in the Scored column . Select that number, and then select Performance Across Skills in the pop-up window .
For each skill's row, the number in the Score column shows the average of the students' scores on questions dealing with that skill. Select the arrow next to the name of a skill (it will change to a down arrow ) to see this broken down to the individual student level.

Selecting the name of the skill opens the Performance Across All Assignments view:

In the Performance Across All Assignments view for a skill, you can see other assessments and assignments that have questions addressing that skill , along with the programs they were used in, the dates they were assigned, and what the average score was for those questions. Select the arrow next to the name of a skill (it will change to a down arrow ) to see this broken down to the individual student level.
Select Back to return to the prior view.

Scores and Item Types

I want to see students' test scores in relation to the types of question they were answering.

Select the name of a plan to see all the assessments that are in that plan .
Assessments that have at least one student's work scored will show a number in the Scored column . Select that number, and then select Performance Across Item Types in the pop-up window .

This will show you the item types that were used in the chosen assessment, and how the students scored on each type of question (the percentage of each type of question that students answered correctly).
Select Back to return to the prior view.

I want to see how a specific student's test scores relate to the types of questions the student was answering.

Select the name of a plan to see all the assessments that are in that plan .
Assessments that have at least one student's work scored will show a number in the Scored column . Select that number, and then select Performance Across Item Types in the pop-up window .
In the row for each item type, the number in the Score column shows the average of the students' scores each type of question (the percentage of each type of question that students answered correctly). Select the arrow next to the name of an item type (it will change to a down arrow ) to see this broken down to the individual student level.
Select Back to return to the prior view.

I want to see a specific student's answers to the questions in an assessment.

Select the arrow next to the name of a plan.
In the list of students with finished, scored assessments (those with a number in the Scored column), select the student's name .
For any assessments the student has completed, Complete will be shown in the Status column . Select Complete, and then select Item Responses in the pop-up window .
This opens the item response view for the assessment. For each item on the assessment, you can see its title , the answer the student gave , the correct answer , the skill that item addresses , and the source of the item .

To see the information for items on another assessment, select the assessment from the drop-down list and select Update . In the navigation sentence at the top, you can choose a different student or different information to view (recent item responses, most used item responses, or an item responses search).

Select Back to Previous App to go back to Star Custom.

Scores and Domain Mastery

I want to see students' mastery of the domains addressed in their completed assessments.

Select the name of a plan to see all the assessments that are in that plan .
Assessments that have at least one student's work scored will show a number in the Scored column . Select that number, and then select Mastery in the pop-up window .
This will show you the domain scores and confidence levels for the skills covered by all of the assessments that the students have completed. These are the average scores for all the selected students.

In the list of students with finished, scored assessments (those with a number in the Scored column), select the student's name .

Students Checking Their Assessment Results

What does a student see when that student checks the results of an unscored assessment?

In the Assignment List on a student's Home page, a Star Custom test that has been submitted but has not been scored yet will be shown as In-Progress . Select the down arrow below that (; it will change to an up arrow ) will open a drop-down list, which shows the name of the assessment and how long ago it was submitted .

Links in the page header let you skip to specific Star Custom functions:

Create/Edit Assessment takes you to the Assessments page, where you can create and edit assessments.

Plan Instruction takes you to the Plans page, where you can view any assessment plans you have created, delete them if necessary, or create a new assessment plan.

View Reports takes you to the Star / Assessments tab on the reports page. There, you can view Star Custom data on a number of different reports and dashboards.
