Secure Browser: Download and Installation

In an online testing environment, school districts in some states require students to use a secure web browser when taking a Star assessment. If this is required in your state, Star assessments have been designed to work with the Respondus® LockDown® Browser.

It is the responsibility of your school district's IT department to make sure the secure browser is installed on the necessary testing computers and to ensure it is kept up-to-date.

States currently requiring secure browsers: Arkansas

The secure browser is currently compatible with Windows and Macintosh computers, but is not compatible with Chromebooks or iPads. For additional assistance, contact support at answers@renaissance.com.


Windows

  1. Go to https://downloads.renaissance-go.com/securebrowser/index.html and select Windows Download to download the installer. It will be in a zip folder: LockDownBrowserLabOEM-MSI (MSI for managed install).zip.
  2. Log in as a local administrator with full rights. (WindowsControl PanelUser Accounts"user account"Change your account typeAdministrator).
  3. Unzip the folder and run the installer inside it (Respondus LockDown Browser Lab OEM.msi).
  4. Accept all the default prompts to install the browser.
  5. Go to your desktop and double-click the browser icon to start the secure browser.

Mac

  1. Go to https://downloads.renaissance-go.com/securebrowser/index.html to download the installer. It will be in a zip folder: InstallLDBOEM.zip.
  2. Log in as a local administrator with full rights. (In System PreferencesUsers & Groups, the user account must have "Allow user to administer this computer" enabled.)
  3. If the downloaded file did not automatically unzip, locate InstallLDBOEM.zip (usually in the Downloads folder), and double-click the file to start Archiver and unzip the file.
  4. Locate the installer package (Install Respondus LockDown Browser OEM (x64c).pkg) and double-click it to start the installer.
  5. Accept all the default prompts to install the browser.
  6. Go to FinderApplications and double-click the browser icon to start the secure browser.
