Goals and Benchmarks

On the Goals & Benchmarks page, you can see the Star goals that you have set for your students, and you can choose to set new goals or view or edit benchmarks for Star test scores.

How to Get to the Goals & Benchmarks Page

If you aren't already on the Goals & Benchmarks page, on the Home page, select Star Reading, Star Early Literacy, or Star Math; then, select Manage Goals & Benchmarks.

If the software goes back to the Home page after you choose Manage Goals & Benchmarks, you do not have the user permissions required to view or manage goals.

Setting New Goals

Goals can be set for students' Star Early Literacy, Star Math, and Star Reading scores (Scaled Scores, Percentile Ranks, and Student Growth Percentiles).

To set reading practice goals for the quizzes that students take in Accelerated Reader, see Accelerated Reader Goals (Record Book). To set reading certification goals, see Accelerated Reader Certifications (Record Book).

To set new Star goals for your students, select Set a Goal.

Viewing and Editing Benchmarks

To see the benchmarks that are being used for Star tests, and to make changes if necessary, select View or Edit Benchmarks.

Viewing Goals

At the bottom of the Goals & Benchmarks page, you can see the Star goals that you have already set for the selected students. District administrators can view goals for any class or students in any school. School administrators can view goals for any class or students in their school. Teachers can view goals for their classes and students.

First, click Select (either the link or the button) to choose which students' goals you would like to see.

In the window that opens, choose the school in the first column if necessary. Then, choose a class in the second column. (You can search the items in a column by clicking within that column and then typing Ctrl+F or control-F on the keyboard.) In the third column, first choose whether to select all students in the class or some (Select Students). If you choose "Select Students," check the students whose goals you want to view. When you're done, select Apply.

Use the check boxes to choose whether to see goals that are upcoming (the goal time period has not started), goals that are in progress, and/or goals that are completed (for which the end date has passed).

At the bottom of the page, each type of goal that you have set will be listed. (Since students can only have one goal of each type at a time, goal types will only be listed once for each subject.)

To see the status of a goal type for the students, select the arrow to the left of the goal type name.

For each type of goal, you will see the subject, the date range (and the marking period name if you chose a marking period), the goal, the student's actual performance, and the status.

For goals that are in the future (the time period has not started yet), the status will be Upcoming. If the goal has started, but the end date hasn't arrived yet, the status is In Progress. After the end date, the status shows whether the student has achieved the goal (Achieved or Not Achieved).

These types of goals may be included:

  • Percentile Rank (Reading and Math): For reading, Percentile Rank goals can include Star Reading tests and/or Star Early Literacy tests. For math, only Star Math tests are included (you can select Algebra and Geometry tests as well as Enterprise and Progress Monitoring). You will see the students' latest Percentile Ranks and the goal.
  • Scaled Score (Reading and Math, Unified and Enterprise Scales): For reading, Scaled Score goals can include Star Reading tests and/or Star Early Literacy tests. If you choose the Unified Scale goal, one goal can be set for both Star Reading and Star Early Literacy; if you choose Enterprise Scale goals, the Star Reading and Star Early Literacy goals are separate. For math, Star Math tests are used for Scaled Score goals. You can set goals for the Unified or Enterprise Scale; you can also select Algebra and Geometry tests as well as Enterprise and Progress Monitoring. As you view goal progress, you will see the students' latest Scaled Scores and the goal.
  • If only one Scaled Score goal is available for reading and one for math, these goals are on the Unified scale.

  • Star Math, Star Early Literacy, or Star Reading SGP: For reading, you can set a Student Growth Percentile goal for either Star Early Literacy or Star Reading. For math, you can set a Student Growth Percentile goal for Star Math. You will see the students' current Student Growth Percentile.

You can edit a specific student's goal by selecting Edit at the end of the row for a student. On the Edit Goal page, you can make your changes, and then select Save Goals.

You can also delete a student's goal by selecting Delete in the row.

You can also see students' progress toward goals in the Goal History Report.

Students cannot see their progress toward Star test goals.
