Summary Diagnostic Report and Accelerated Reader

The Summary Diagnostic Report summarizes your students' performance on Reading Practice Quizzes, Other Reading Quizzes, and Article Quizzes.

The report should be reviewed weekly by teachers, administrators, librarians, and reading specialists to identify students who are having problems and may need intervention. Because the report uses diagnostic - or "at risk" - codes to identify students who may be struggling, it is not an appropriate tool for publicly posting a class's progress. The student performance information on the report should be treated as confidential.

When you generate the report, for each student, the report shows:

  • Diagnostic codes that apply
  • The average percent correct (and the goal if one has been set)
  • Goals include Reading Practice Quizzes, Other Reading Quizzes, and Article Quizzes. If you have chosen to generate the report for just one of these quiz types, note that the "Actual" columns may not show you all of the students' progress toward the goal.

    Only goals that have the same start and end dates as the reporting period will be shown.

  • The points possible for the quizzes and the points earned (actual) and the goal if one has been set
  • The percentage read independently (instead of the student being read to or read with - see TWI and TWI Monitoring for more information)
  • The percentage of reading practice that was nonfiction
  • The estimated engaged time per day in minutes
  • The average book level (difficulty level) and the goal if one has been set
  • The reading certification the student is working toward (if a certification goal has been set - shown for Reading Practice Quizzes)
  • A table of the diagnostic codes that explains each code and includes the number and percentage of students who have each code in the class or group
  • Class or group totals

Who can do this with default user permissions?

District Level Administrators, District Dashboard Owners, District Staff, School Level Administrators, School Staff, Teachers

  1. On the Home page, select Accelerated Reader Independent Reading; then, select Reports from the menu. (You can select the Reading Reports tile on the Home page instead.)
  2. On the Reports page, the Accelerated Reader/Reading Practice tab is selected. In the Monitor Progress section of the page, select Summary Diagnostic Report. (If you have added the report to the Pinned Reports, you'll find it under that section at the top of the page.)
  3. Use the Quiz Type drop-down list to choose the type of quiz to report on: All Reading (which includes Reading Practice Quizzes, Other Reading Quizzes, and Article Quizzes), Reading Practice Quizzes, Other Reading Quizzes, or Article Quizzes.

  5. To change the selected school teacher, class, and/or students, select Change Students.
  6. Then, choose the students to include in the report. Teachers can only choose students in their own classes and groups.

    1. In the popup window, if there is a Schools column, select a school. (This column isn't available if you only have access to one school.)
    2. If the Teachers column is available, at the top of the column, choose either All Teachers (to choose all the teachers in the school) or Select Teachers (to choose specific teachers; check the ones you want in the list). This column is not available to teachers unless they are assigned to more than one school.
    3. At the top of the Classes column, choose either All Classes (to choose all the classes for the teachers) or Select Classes (to choose specific classes; check the ones you want in the list).
    4. Teachers, school administrators, and school staff will also see a Groups column. At the top of the Groups column, choose either All Groups or Select Groups; if you choose Select Groups, check the groups that you want to include. The first choice in the column is "Whole Class" or "Whole Classes"; choose this to report on the class(es) as a whole. Below that, you will see groups you created.
    5. You may need to scroll to the right to see the Students column. At the top of the Students column, choose either All Students (to choose all the students) or Select Students (to choose specific students; check the ones you want in the list).
    6. You can search the items in a column by clicking within that column and then typing Ctrl+F or control-F on the keyboard.

      When you are done making your choices, select Apply (or Cancel to close the window without saving your choices).
  7. If you want to use demographic data to focus the report on specific students, select Choose Demographics.
  8. By default, the "All" option is chosen for Ethnicity, Gender, Language (the students' primary language, if specified), and Grade Level. To focus the report on specific groups, choose the "Select" option at the top of the appropriate column and then check your selections in that column. Note that ethnicity, gender, primary language, and grade level may be specified for students when you add them to the software, but only grades are required; other information may not be available for your students.


    In the example above, the user has selected one Language and three Grade Levels, while leaving Ethnicity and Gender at the default "All" options. Note: The Filter Reports by Ethnicity user permission may be set to prevent the use of ethnicities as a filter.

    By default, the "All" option is chosen for Characteristics. To focus the report on students with specific characteristics, choose Select Characteristics; then, check the characteristics that you are interested in. You must also choose any or all above the check boxes to specify whether students with any of the selected characteristics will be included in the report or only those with all of the selected characteristics.


    In the example above, the user selected two Characteristics (ADA and ESL). Because any is selected, the report will include students who are ADA, ESL, or both. If all had been selected, only students who are both ADA and ESL would be included. Note: The Filter Reports by Characteristics user permission may be set to prevent the use of characteristics as a filter.

    Once you have finished choosing demographic options, select Apply at the bottom of the window to save your choices (or Cancel to close the window without saving your choices).

  9. Use the Group By drop-down list to choose whether to group students by their classes or groups, to group them by grade, or not to group students (include all students in one list).
  10. By default, the report will include the current school year. If you want to choose a marking period or custom dates instead, select the date field.
  11. If you want to use one of the marking periods that have been added for your school, select the marking period in the list.

    If you want to use custom dates, select Custom. In the calendars, select the first date in the range; then, select the last date. (Use the arrows to the left and right of the months to go back or forward.)

  12. Choose the scale to use for the book levels on the report: ATOS or Lexile®.
  13. You can also select the Quiz Language. Use the drop-down list to choose whether to include both English and Spanish-language quizzes in the report, English quizzes only, or Spanish quizzes only.
  14. If you only want to include classes or groups who have data, check Hide Groups Without Data.
  15. Select Update Report under the options.
  16. The report will open under the button with the class or group name and the teachers shown above the table(s). Since the table has several columns, you will probably need to scroll to the right to see some of them; use the scroll bar under the table to do this.
  17. The diagnostic codes may include the following. Note that students who have at least one code are also marked "at risk" on the report. The codes on the report apply to the quiz types you selected at the top of the page (All Reading, Reading Practice, Other Reading, or Article Quizzes).

    Diagnostic Code Description Possible Causes and Suggestions
    A No activity - the student has not completed any activity in the time period The student may not have been present. This code may also indicate that the student is unmotivated. The student may also be reading a long book and may not yet be ready to take a quiz.
    B Low average percent correct (70-79%) The student may be attempting work that is too difficult.
    The student may need help selecting a book and may need instruction in comprehension strategies. Students who are English language learners will be especially affected by a book's content and vocabulary.
    C Very low average percent correct (<70%) The student may be attempting work that is too difficult. The student may be unaware of his or her Zone of Proximal Development and may be reading books that are too difficult or too long. A student who is taking many quizzes and doing poorly may be focused on earning points instead of reading for understanding or pleasure.
    D Low points earned (less than 1/2 the median points) The student is either not spending time reading or is doing so poorly on quizzes that he or she is not earning points. The student may also have been absent, may be wasting time, or may be choosing books that are too difficult. In some cases, students may be having trouble finding interesting books. If the student is an English Language Learner, the student may be reading more slowly than average.
    E Low percent correct with above median points The student is likely to be focused on earning points instead of reading for understanding or pleasure.
    F Very low percent correct with above median points The student is likely to be focused on earning points instead of reading for understanding or pleasure. The student may be choosing very high-point books and guessing at answers.
    % Average percent correct below 85% The student may need help selecting a book and may need instruction in comprehension strategies. Students who are English Language Learners will be especially affected by a book's content and vocabulary.

    If you want to print the report, select the PDF icon in the top right corner of the page. You can print the PDF file that opens.

    When you're ready to leave the page, you can select the Home button to go back to the Home page, or select the button circled below to go back to the Reports page.
